After graduating with a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Jennifer Joanou became a successful fashion designer, selling her clothing to retailers across the country. Several years later, she went on to study photography with such teachers as Mary Ellen Mark and Keith Carter.
The process of capturing subjects with a lens has since evolved into the creation of more abstract images on mixed media including fabric, altered books or handmade visual journals. Her unusual methods involve writing text to access her subconscious, adding paint and mixed media to cover the text, ultimately developing a new canvas. She often creates larger images based on these initial inspirations, sometimes on fabric, adding embroidery to make textured pieces. Jennifer’s work explores the spaces between the "every day" and the many conflicts that come from our own learned anxieties as well as from the increasing discontent in the outside world. Her studio is in New York City, where she lives with her husband.
